Traveler Tuesday

It’s a “comeback” story……

Traveler, our twelve year old quarter horse gelding has come back from a debilitating injury – sweeney shoulder. He had run into a concrete post a little over a year ago – and has since made the slow but sure progress back to recovery.

All the muscle along his left shoulder and across half his chest had atrophied. When he walked his shoulder would roll outward and his body would roll and dip downwards with a distinctive abnormal motion.  It was a very sad and painful sight to see………..also knowing that the possibility existed that he might not recover added to our distressed concerns about his welfare.

Each month passed with a small but encouraging bit of progress. His muscles returned ever so slowly, an inch at a time. Appropriate exercise, nutrition, herbs, light treatments and massages – all contributed to his rehabilitation.

There were times during this year long process that doubts arose as to whether he would be the same again – our prayers for healing were sent up to God over and over………and we wondered how God would answer our prayers.

Thankfully, we never gave up during Traveler’s road to recovery. It was slow, but it was worth the wait. God allowed Traveler to “come back” and to be an inspiration to others to not give up –

– God made sure our wait wasn’t wasted !

Wisdom teeth Wednesday

When I was in my early twenties, I had all four wisdom teeth removed. They were impacted, so it was a major procedure. Of course I was anesthetized, so I didn’t have any pain during the operation. It was later, during the recovery period, that I was able to experience the painful after effects.  Thanks to the regular dose of painkillers, I was able to groggily spend several days, waiting for my face to go back to its normal shape. Friends told me I looked like a chubby chipmunk.

It seems strange that something that causes such a problem for most people would be called “wisdom teeth”.  Apparently, they were named as such because they grow in last, after the other teeth have formed – usually appearing in the late teens to early twenties. Most of the time, there is not enough room in the mouth for them to grow permanently, so removing them provides an alternative.

As in our lives, wisdom does seem to come  “later” – with age – as we mature and accumulate life experiences. Hopefully, we gain wisdom from our experiences, and not just additional data, stored up for future reference. If there is no “room” in our heads for great wisdom, we may end up having a bunch of useless information, not doing us any good.

“The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom…….”  (Prov. 10:31)

Let wisdom come out of your mouth – even after your “wisdom” teeth have been removed !

Wonder Horse Wednesday

The vet called him a “wonder horse” !

Our quarterhorse crashed into a very large concrete post. His shoulder took the impact, and thankfully, nothing was broken. Unfortunately, he has developed a “sweeney” shoulder due to his injury. This means that the nerves for his shoulder have been damaged, and the muscles over his shoulder bones have atrophied. Unless the nerves regenerate, he cannot be ridden, due to the instability of his shoulder when he moves. The shoulder joint literally swings outward when weight is applied.

At the veterinary clinic, he responded well to the exams and x-rays, and also to the initial physical therapy. His gentle nature and rather humorous personality became an endearing aspect to everyone working around him. Being a newcomer to all the above, and doing so well through it all,  we had to agree that he was somewhat of a “wonder horse”.

Now we have to “wonder” if he will heal from this unforeseen accident. Reports have shown that this could take anywhere from six weeks to a year – or not heal at all. Each horse is different. This was not in “our” plan.  He was supposed to be giving more beginner riders a chance to learn about riding and relating to the “wonder” of the horse.

Once again, we’ve had to put our trust in God. The Bible reminds us that God turns unfortunate circumstances into something good. His plan is always more “wonderful” than ours –

even for a “wonder” horse !

Throw-up Thursday

It was time to retrieve our one year old grandaughter from her bed. Our three year old grandson went up the stairs ahead of me to help out. As I approached her room, I heard our grandson exclaim, “she made a big mess!”  I wasn’t too concerned at that point. I figured she probably just threw all her toys out of her crib. But upon arriving on the scene, I quickly realized it was a whole lot more than toys all around her crib. She had thrown up, let’s say – spewed, all over herself, the crib, the carpet, her blankey – and it was tangled up in her hair…………..

Well, since it was a hot summer afternoon, I decided that it might be best to just take her outside in the back yard and hose her off. I also took the pad from her crib and took that outside to hose off too.

One thing led to another, and the three of us had a wonderful time hosing off the pad, and each other for the next couple of hours. We ended up using the pad for a clean place to stand and sit while running the water over us.  I thought to myself that what had seemed a depressing, messy situation had eventually led to something very good.

Many times in the Bible we see how God brings good out of bad circumstances. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” (Rom. 8:28)

“He” can take any mess………….and clean it up !

Therapy Thursday

What’s your therapy?

I love to go for a ride on my horse out in the country, just before sunset. Swimming laps in an outdoor pool always refreshes me. And, once in a while, some chocolate chip cookie dough hits the spot!

Ultimately, talking things through with a trusted friend, and/or counselor does wonders to put our issues in perspective. But what “kind” of perspective I acquire makes a difference. A healthy perspective on life doesn’t just happen automatically. Finding out what is truly healthy requires devoted research and discipline. A healthy perspective has to come from somewhere…………….

God’s Bible is our manual on how to develop a healthy perspective. Every life experience that can be imagined is described, along with the ending results. The wisdom handed down through the ages has been tried and tested. The whole story is there, along with what we need to know to develop our life’s purpose. My daily reading of the Bible puts my perspective on a strong and healthy track. It will be my “viewfinder” for life……

—–  and I will need less “therapy” !
